Yoga has a long tradition of one to one tuition. The advantages of personal instruction are numerous, most obvious misalignments can be immediately addressed and questions can be fully explored.
Understanding the Underlying Principles
Many people lack confidence and have difficulty in making the initial commitment to join a yoga class. It is sometimes beneficial for students to have a couple of private lessons before joining a general class, this way they have a thorough grounding in the underlying principles of the movements and have the confidence to work at their own level without being drawn into 'competing' with more practiced students.
One of the potential pitfalls of learning yoga is that we try to push the body into positions where it is unable to comfortably settle. This is an unintelligent way of working and often leads to injury and setbacks. Without the capacity to relax within the posture, there is little lasting benefit. Struggle creates tension, disturbs breathing and is entirely counterproductive to the true goal of yoga – mental, emotional and physical equilibrium.
